Me: *drawing an elf* Sister: Oooh, I like him! But... Me: What? Sis: I want him to have black hair. Me: Elves don't have black hair. Sis: Then he'll have that mutation thing that makes it black. Me: You mean melanism. Humans can't have that. And even if he did, his skin would also be...hmm, I think I have an idea here! -- Sheesh, I don't remember black people being so hard to draw! Nevertheless, I like challenging concepts (especially ones that make you sketch for hours) and this guy turned out fine after I colored him. The best part for me was probably the coloring and I actually didn't have to use any references for it. Black skin is more fun to color since it's less dependent on surrounding colors (unlike white). I wanted him to be more black though but I guess this is good too since you can see details better.
-------------------------
Haha you know, the simplest concepts like this I've never seen and... it's so simple, you think someone else would have thought of it, eh? It makes it so unique. Instead of trying to draw a crazy mutant elf to make it "new" you just take something people overlook.
Never seen it before, and yet so obvious. Good job.

Thank you very much for that comment, sorry for not replying sooner. Yeah, it's such a simple idea, I was sure it has been done many times already but apparently not. And you're right, many artists look for originality by making things more and more ridiculous. The real world is crazy enough as it is and one just has to go out of their comfort zone to find something new.

Well, where did you get the idea that elves can't have dark skin or black hair? You must know about all the different elven types... drow, high elves, wood elves, sea elves...

Black elves are an unusual concept because of the fact that elves come from European mythology and we don't have many black people here. It doesn't have anything to do with racism, it just doesn't occur to anyone that there might be elves in Africa too, which I guess makes sense since there really aren't any in their myths. Although, there's no reason I can think of why elves, if they really existed, wouldn't spread or come from Africa too .
As for black hair, I used to draw them like that until my sis told me elves have white hair. I guess it makes them more magical

Remember the original look for Link from The Legend of Zelda? He had brown hair. I think elves were commonly portrayed with dark hair until recently, with games like World Of Warcraft and lots of anime portraying them with mostly white and blonde hair. But asians have always sort of obsessed over lighter hair colours, since they are so rare to find in the orient.
